Sri Lankan-origin Australian writer Shankari Chandran Sri Lankan-origin Australian writer Shankari Chandran won the 2023 Literary Award for her novel ‘Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens’ the published book ‘Chai Time at Cinnamon Gardens, highlights Australia’s difficult and complex equation with multiculturalism and the traumas of post-colonialism, highlighting stories shape the people that we are today. The Miles Franklin Literary Award is an annual prize given to “a novel which is of the highest literary merit and presents Australian life in any of its phases by the judges including Richard Neville- State Library of NSW Mitchell librarian and Chair; author Bernadette Brennan; translator Mridula Nath Chakraborty; critic James Ley; and poet Elfie Shiosaki. The Miles Franklin Literary Award is one of the most prestigious literary awards in Australia. Previous winners of the award include Thea Astley, Jessica Anderson, and Tim Winton, among others.

Set around the cultural war at a nursing home, Shankari Chandran become the winner of the literacy award where she collected the prestigious $60,000 award in Sydney. Awarding the award, the judges released the statement “It treads carefully on contested historical claims, reminding us that horrors forgotten are horrors bound to be repeated and that the reclamation and retelling of history cannot be undertaken without listening to the story-tellers amongst us. She belongs to the family of both doctors who fled Sri Lanka, the author told to the Guardian “There certainly is a lot of rage in the book…But I feel like a lot of my work begins from that place of rage. But through the writing, through the thinking and in the reflecting, it goes to a place of love. I hope.”
