Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) The Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) has completed 9 years of successful implementation which was recognised as the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, after its launch on 28th August 2014 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The Ministry of Finance implemented PMJDY which was committed to fostering financial inclusiveness and providing support to economically disadvantaged sections. On this occasion of the 9th anniversary of PMJDY, Union Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman said that over 50 crore individuals have been brought into the formal banking system through Jan Dhan Accounts, with around 55.5% of these accounts belonging to women. Rural and semi-urban areas account for 67% of these accounts. The total deposits in these accounts have crossed ₹2 lakh crore. Furthermore, approximately 34 crore RuPay cards have been issued, each equipped with a ₹2 lakh accident insurance cover.

Announced on 15th August 2014 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on his Independence Day, with the ancient Sanskrit verse: Sukhasya Moolam Dharma, Dharmasya Moolam Artha, Arthasya Moolam Rajyam, run by Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance. Regarding its records, The Guinness Book of World Records stated that “The most bank accounts opened in one week as a part of the financial inclusion campaign is 18,096,130 and was achieved by the Government of India from August 23 to 29, 2014”.By 27 June 2018, over 318 million bank accounts were opened and over ₹792 billion (US$12 billion) were deposited under the scheme
