IRS officer Sanjay Kumar Agarwal took charge of the Chairman of the Central Board of Indirect Taxrd and Customs ( CBIC), where he succeed ti Vivke Johri, who was superannuated as CBIC chief on May 31.  The Central Board of Indirect Tax and Customs ( CBIC) deals with policymaking in indirect taxes — GST, customs, and excise — is headed by a chairman and has six members on the board. The board is assisted by principal chief commissioners/chief commissioners and principal director generals/ director generals It is a statutory body under the Ministry of Finance, Government of India. It is responsible for the administration of indirect taxes in India, which include customs, central excise, service tax, and goods and services tax (GST). The CBIC also has the responsibility of preventing tax evasion and smuggling. The CBIC Chairperson holds the rank of Secretary to the Government of India and receives a salary equivalent to that of Chief Secretaries in State Governments, as well as Vice Chiefs of Army Staff or Commanders holding the rank of Lieutenant General and equivalent positions in the Indian Armed Forces.
