Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity Project (SL-UDI) In the significant improvement of the relationship between Sri Lanka and India, India extended a loan of credit to Sri Lanka for an innovative digital identity project. Known as the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity Project (SL-UDI), aiming at converting the nation’s technological landscape. The Sri Lanka government received a total of ₹450 million which constitutes 15% of the total funds required for the successful execution of the project, which involves collecting biographic and biometric data, encompassing facial, iris, and fingerprint information. This information will be stored in a centralised system at the standard of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). For this project, a collaborative monitoring committee known as the Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Project Monitoring Committee (JPMC) have been started in the country

Sri Lanka gots its own Digital Identity project

Under its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy, India recently provided 450 million for the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity (SL-UDI) Project. this loan sanction is done at the meeting at the Presidential Secretariat, in the presence of Presidential Senior Adviser on National Security and Chief of Presidential Staff, Sagala Ratnayaka, State Minister of Technology, Kanaka Herath, Indian High Commissioner, Gopal Bagley, and First Secretary of the Indian High Commission, Eldos Mathew. After the meeting concluded,  a statement from the President’s Office said“Signifying the Indian government’s commitment to the initiative, the Indian High Commissioner handed over a significant contribution of Indian ₹450 million to Minister Kanaka Herath (State Minister of Technology), constituting 15 per cent of the total funds required for the successful implementation of the project as an advance payment,” Sri Lanka is going to benefits more effective and efficient delivery of government services, poverty reduction and welfare programs; financial inclusion through better access to banking and other products/services while India is curtailing its Chinese influence. The project commenced with the signing of an MoU between Sri Lanka and India in March 2022 and an Indo-Sri Lanka Joint Project Monitoring Committee (JPMC) for the Sri Lanka Unique Digital Identity Project (SL-UDI) was introduced, where the Government of India is overseeing the software development for the SL-UDI.
